Return to New York, Week 1

August 8th, 2007

I’ve been in the tri-state area for one week. In sum the week has been: invigorating, refreshing, relaxing and reaffirming. What, praytell, have I been up to lately?

*I acquired the mother of all blisters on my poor pinky toe. I planned to meet Kira on Friday to go to a free dance party at South Street seaport. As my first official weekend night out, I thought I would dress to the nines, e.g., wear my new Cons. After walking across town, and disregarding the very clear signs of impending rain, thunder and lightning, we reached the seaport just in time for… the downpour. I always find myself in these situations with Kira. Inclement weather may be the tie that bends. Anyway, the torrential rains required us to flee from the tented in dance party and run to the closest subway. The entrance to the Wall St station was just far enough to ensure that I would be soaked and also render my left foot useless.

*Enjoyed a phenomenal meal at Nolia’s in Alphabet City. Who knew that you could pay over $90 bones for a dinner for two in Alphabet goddamn City! My old partner-in-crime, Lils and I, met for overpriced subterranean drinks at the Blue Owl before indulging in filet mignon spring rolls. At the Blue Owl, be cautious when ordering olives with the martinis. There’s a reason they don’t use a cocktail pick. The olives have pits. Ugh. Anyway, let’s return to the spring rolls. Now, that is something I have ever encountered. I felt at once impressed and indifferent by this offering. It’s NY, for Pete’s sake.

*Day-tripped to Long Beach. Quaint and quiet little beach town. Everyone rides a cruiser and has a Long Island accent. The beach was sparsely populated and the water gorgeous. The only thing missing was a tall boy. Next time….

*I’ve spent my unearned wages on a pair of Tory Burch ballerina flats and a dress for my birthday. I adore living in a place that supports (and challenges) my fashion sense.

Stay tuned for more adventures in the Big Bad…

Newest wheels.

hot wheelz.

After years of scoffing the men in spandex biking around suburbia, I have joined their legions. I purchased a 2005 Fuji Newest road bike this weekend, with the assistance of my seasoned cyclist-friend, Deb. I bought shimano spd pedals and the most garish shoes I could find. It’s a terrifying and exhilarating experience to be physically connected to a bike. I look forward to many bike excursions through Maryland and Virginia. But for the moment, I’m going to stick to a three block radius. I need to work on the whole “not falling off the bike, especially in front of pedestrians and people in cars.”
